Reinforcement is ANY caregiver behavior, peer behavior or environmental situation that increases the likelihood that the behavior will repeat. This is exclusive of whether or not the action was “aversive” or “desirable”. Time out is an aversive procedure but often serves as a reinforcer for children with autism as the behavior increases after the use of time out.
